For early childhood educators, developmentally effective approaches to develop a trusting relationship with young children is necessary for their growth in all aspects of their life. If a child's needs aren't met by the adult, then they'll be more susceptible to be rebellious, defiant, or act in an inappropriate manner.
Speaking with children in a way that is not condescending or verbally abusive but rather set an intention to practice positive discipline. The goal adults should have when disciplining is to focus on "developing the child's inner control and his own sense of responsibility and respect for the rights of others...through open, honest dialogue" (Miller, 2016, p.202). Those who care for young children should be expected to be a good role model by gaining their respect as well as implementing these communication skills (Miller, 2016, p.203):
Understand children's needs
Clearly express your expectations
Provide eye contact at eye level
Limit distractions
Slow down when speaking and stick to the point
Pick one thing to deal with it at time so the child doesn't feel overwhelmed
Use simple but meaningful speech
Use gestures to clarify meaning
